To ensure the safety of our members, IMLS is helping NAR to promote Realtor® Safety Month. Knowledge, awareness, and empowerment form the foundation of Realtor® safety, it’s essential to acknowledge the potential risks and challenges that realtors face when showing properties and meeting potential clients/customers. Promoting realtor safety is paramount to creating a secure and thriving industry. By implementing strategies and adopting a proactive approach, we can empower real estate professionals and ensure their well-being.
Education and Training: Comprehensive safety education and training programs are crucial for real estate professionals. Agencies and associations should prioritize providing safety guidelines, workshops, and resources that address potential risks and equip realtors with the necessary skills to handle challenging situations. Training should cover personal safety awareness, self-defense techniques, property assessment, and client screening protocols.
Technology: Leveraging technology can significantly enhance realtor safety. Realtors can consider using smartphone apps that enable tracking and emergency response functions, allowing them to alert colleagues or authorities in case of an emergency. Additionally, virtual tours and video conferencing tools can minimize the need for realtors to physically visit properties alone, reducing potential risks.
Pre-screening Clients: Realtors should adopt a rigorous client pre-screening process to mitigate potential dangers. Verifying client identities, conducting background checks, and obtaining proof of financial capability can help weed out potentially risky individuals. Collaborating with reputable mortgage lenders and requiring pre-approvals can add an extra layer of security.
Team Support: Implementing a team support system within real estate agencies can create a culture of safety and support. Realtors can pair up or work in teams when visiting properties or meeting unfamiliar clients. Establishing open lines of communication and encouraging colleagues to check in regularly can ensure that realtors feel supported and connected.
Collaborating with Law Enforcement: Building strong relationships with local law enforcement agencies can enhance realtor safety significantly. Establishing direct communication channels and sharing information about potentially risky situations or individuals can help authorities take proactive measures. Joint workshops and training sessions can also help realtors understand law enforcement procedures and best practices.
Promoting realtor safety is crucial for the well-being and success of real estate professionals. By Implementing these measures, Realtors® can continue to serve their clients diligently and safely.
